R.I.P. - Bill Nyrop - Remember the West Palm Beach Blaze?
Today we’re honoring Mr. Bill Nyrop. Bill won 3 straight Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1970’s. He also won three straight Sunshine Hockey League Championships as Owner/GM/ & Coach of the West Palm Beach Blaze from 1992-1995. Sadly he passed away from cancer at just 43 on December 31st, 1995. R.I.P. Bill.
Happy Birthday Spaceman!
Steve Wallace - San Francisco 49ers Offensive Tackle # 74
Happy Birthday to Steve Wallace. The San Francisco 49ers Offensive Tackle protected two of the best, Joe Montana & Steve Young, from 1986 to 1996, while winning three Super Bowls. Unfortunately he broke his ankle on the 3rd play of Super Bowl XXIII. I mostly remember Steve for his huge padded helmet that he donned for several years after suffering numerous concussions.

December 24th, 1989 - Coldest Game Ever Played at Joe Robbie Stadium
30 years ago today the Miami Dolphins & Kansas City Chiefs played a basically meaningless game in the final week of the 1989 season. It is the coldest home game ever played by the Dolphins. Temperatures at the 1 p.m. kickoff hung around 38 degrees with a wind chill of 28. I remember being 8 years old and being so stoked because we were actually having a cold Xmas in South Florida! It was a back and forth battle in the frozen tropics that day between two teams hanging on by a thread in the playoff push. The Chiefs would go on to win 27-24 and finish their season 8-7-1. Miami finished 8-8. Happy Holidays!
Steve Garvey a.k.a. - 'Mr. Clean'
Steve Garvey is the ‘Iron Man’ of the National League. Mr. Clean’s 1207 consecutive games played is 4th all-time in MLB History. He suited up for the Dodgers & Padres from September of 1975 to July of 1983. Happy Birthday Steve!
Dave Kingman - Kong in The Tropics
Happy Birthday Kong! Of all the former MLB players to participate in the short lived Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989, Dave Kingman’s 442 career Homeruns was the most of any hitter. Dave hit .271 with 8 HR’s and 40 RBI’s for the 1st place West Palm Beach Tropics. The league would fold in 1990 midway through it’s 2nd season.
It's Friday My Friends!
Charles Oakley
Charles Oakley playing on the Chicago Bulls always looked strange to me. Oak was picked 9th overall in the 1985 draft by Cleveland, but his draft rights were traded to the Bulls. Charles had a few solid years in Chicago including All-Rookie Honors before he was traded to the Knicks for Bill Cartwright in 1988. Happy Birthday Oak Tree !!
Hakeem Coming at ya Sleepy Head
Uncle Cliffy
Happy Birthday John Randle
John Randle is second All-Time amongst Defensive Tackles with 137.5 sacks over his 14 year career. Can you dudes name the other Viking Great who leads the list with 148.5? Happy Birthday John!

Burn of The Week with Tippy Martinez
In a new segment here at The Amazing Blaze Zine titled ‘The Burn of the Week’ we’re highlighting a player who stepped up & dealt their opponent a wicked ‘Burn.’ Our inaugural ‘Burn’ goes to Pitcher Tippy Martinez who during a 1983 game against the Toronto Blue Jays picked off three runners at 1st base all in the same inning! What’s even cooler was that it happened during extra innings. The O’s went on to win it in the bottom of the 10th 7-4.
December 3rd 1993- Hawks hand Houston Their 1st Loss of Season
With a 133-111 victory on December 3rd, 1993 the Atlanta Hawks dealt the Houston Rockets their first loss of the season after a 15-0 start. Atlanta went on to have one of their best seasons in franchise history finishing in 1st place in the East with a 57-25 record but they eventually would lose to the Indiana Pacers in the Conference Finals.
