A day late with this one, but who doesn’t like talking about Nice Days? Let’s look back at a particular awesome game for one of our favorites here at the Amazing Blaze Zine, Mr. Eddie Murray. “Steady Eddie” had himself one hell of a nice day at the plate back on August 26th, 1985 when he went 4 for 5 with 3 homers, including a Grand Slam, and 9 RBI’s during an Orioles 17-3 victory over the California Angels. I’ve got a FREE Blaze package going to the first person who can tell us the Angels pitcher who gave up 4 homers (2 by Eddie) & 7 runs in his short lived relief appearance that day in Anaheim. Thanks for looking guys !!
Baltimore Orioles
Steady Eddie
On May 9th, 1987 Eddie Murray became the first player in MLB History to hit Homers both left handed & right handed in two straight games. Eddie went 7 for 14 with 4 HR, 7 RBI, & 2 doubles in the Orioles 3 game sweep of the Chicago White Sox that Mother’s Day Weekend.
On This Day - Orioles Win 1st Game of 1988 Season
On April, 29th 1988 the Baltimore Orioles shut out the Chicago White Sox 9-0 at Comiskey Park. The victory snapped a 0-21 start to the season for the Birds. The worst start in AL History. They went on to finish 1988 with a 54-107 record.
On This Day - Eddie Hits His 1st Homer
Eddie Murray hit the 1st of his 504 career Home Runs back on April 18th, 1977 in a 4-3 Baltimore victory over the Cleveland Indians. The 6th Inning solo shot came off ex-Orioles 20 game winner Pat Dobson. Eddie would finish out his first year in majors with 26 more round trippers.
Brady Anderson The Only 50/20 & 20/50 Player
During his 50 Homerun season of 1996, Brady Andreson at one point led off 4 straight games with a Homer! The Orioles lost all 4 of those games. Happy Birthday to the only member of the 50/20 & 20/50 Clubs.
Burn of The Week with Tippy Martinez
In a new segment here at The Amazing Blaze Zine titled ‘The Burn of the Week’ we’re highlighting a player who stepped up & dealt their opponent a wicked ‘Burn.’ Our inaugural ‘Burn’ goes to Pitcher Tippy Martinez who during a 1983 game against the Toronto Blue Jays picked off three runners at 1st base all in the same inning! What’s even cooler was that it happened during extra innings. The O’s went on to win it in the bottom of the 10th 7-4.
Cal Ripken #2131
Flashback to September 6th, 1995 when Cal Ripken Jr played in his 2,131st consecutive game, passing the great Lou Gehrig. The ‘Iron Man’ would add a little icing to the cake that day with a 4th Inning Homer.
I’m giving away a copy of our new zine ‘Summer Reruns’ to the first person that sends over a mailing address along with the name of the other All-Star who hit a homer right before Cal that night. Happy Friday Dudes !!
