Man, Chuck Muncie had a heck of a year back in 1981. The San Diego Super Chargers RB compiled over 1100 yards and scored an NFL best 19 touchdowns that season. Happy Birthday Chuck! r.i.p.
Today we’re blasting back to the January 10th, 1982 AFC Championship Game played between The San Diego Chargers & Cincinnati Bengals. Otherwise known as the ‘Freezer Bowl’ it’s the coldest game played in NFL history with the wind chill factor. -59 Degree Wind Chill. What!!! The Bengals dominated the Chargers that day on the Frozen turf of Riverfront Stadium, earning the trip to Super Bowl XVI with their 27 - 7 Victory. Dan Fouts led the NFL in passing for four straight seasons. (‘79-’82) He became the 1st QB in history to surpass 4,000 passing yards in three straight seasons. In 1981 he threw for 4,802 yards and 33 touchdowns in leading the Chargers to the AFC Championship Game.
Speedster Eric Metcalf’s 12 return touchdowns is good for 3rd All-Time. He is also one of only two players in NFL History to have 2 punt return Touchdowns in multiple games. He took two returns to the house against the Steelers in 1993 as a member of the Browns & did it again for San Diego in 1998. Happy Birthday Eric!
Today we’re remembering RB Rodney Culver, his wife Karen, & the 108 other members aboard Valujet Flight 592 which crashed into the Florida Everglades on May 11th, 1996. Rodney was a captain at Notre Dame & part of their ‘88 Championship team, and the almost Championship season of ‘91. The 12th and final touchdown of his short, 4 year, pro career was during the Infamous ‘Snowball Game’ between the San Diego Chargers & New York Giants on December 23rd, 1995.
Happy B-Day to Leslie O’Neal & Ronnie Harmon. The shielded Chargers duo of the early 90′s both had Pro Bowl years in 1992. O’Neal led the AFC with a career high 17 sacks, while Harmon, the dual threat out of the backfield had a career year of his own hauling in 79 passes for over 900 yds.
