On This Day - The Freezer Bowl
Today we’re blasting back to the January 10th, 1982 AFC Championship Game played between The San Diego Chargers & Cincinnati Bengals. Otherwise known as the ‘Freezer Bowl’ it’s the coldest game played in NFL history with the wind chill factor. -59 Degree Wind Chill. What!!! The Bengals dominated the Chargers that day on the Frozen turf of Riverfront Stadium, earning the trip to Super Bowl XVI with their 27 - 7 Victory. Just the week prior the Chargers had battled the Dolphins in 84 Degree Miami during the All-Time NFL Game known as the ‘Epic In Miami.’ Stay Tuned for our Deep Dive into that heartbreaking Miami loss in Blaze Issue # 13…
Dudes We Dig - Ickey Woods
Do the Shuffle. The ‘Ickey Shuffle’ that is. Remember Ickey Woods breakout Rookie Season in 1988? The ‘Runin Rebel’ ran for 1,066 yards, led the league with a 5.3 ypc average and scored 15 Touchdowns as he helped the Bengals reach Super Bowl XXIII. Unfortunately knee injuries in ‘89 would derail his promising career and he would only rush for 455 yards over the next three seasons. Ickey was ultimately forced to retire in 1991 at just 25 years old.
Eric Thomas
Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Eric Thomas made his first & only Pro Bowl squad in 1988 when he finished the season with 7 INT’s and helped the Bengals make it all the way to Super Bowl XXIII. In the AFC Championship game he intercepted Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly in the 1st quarter, and had a crucial pass breakup late in the 4th quarter as the Bills were closing in. Happy Birthday Eric!!
As a youngster I always thought the dudes wearing # 22 were the coolest.
