Ron ‘Popeye’ Jones holds the record for most rebounds by a Dallas Maverick in a single game. Popeye hauled in 28 rebounds (11 offensive & 17 Defensive) against the Indiana Pacers back in January of 1996. Ron recorded his best statistical season in ‘95-’96, averaging 11 points and 11 rebounds a game. Happy Birthday Popeye.
Dallas Mavericks
Fewest Points In A Quarter
The Dallas Mavericks are on a bit of a playoff high these days, but back in the 1997 Season the Mavs reached a new basketball low. In an early April contest of another lost season, Dallas somehow managed to score only 2 points in single quarter . That’s right. Two points!! And those two points happened to come via free throws by Derek Harper. They shot 0-15 from the field in the 3rd Quarter. Amazingly they only lost by seven. 87-80 to the L.A. Lakers.
Reboundin Rodman
Did you know that a 38 year old Dennis Rodman in just 12 games played for the 1999-00 Dallas Mavericks, averaged 11.2 rebounds a game? During his 29 days in Dallas he was also ejected twice & suspended once. The Mavs went 4-9 over that span.
Happy Birthday Rolando Blackman!
Birthday shout out to our dude Rolando Blackman!. The 4X All-Star became the first Panamanian born player to be drafted into the NBA when the Dallas Mavericks picked him 9th overall in the 1981 draft. Cheers!
Doobieous Distinctions - Mavericks Win One!!
Our Doobieous Distinction of the day goes to the 1993-94 Dallas Mavericks who on January 29th, 1994 got their first home victory of the season in a 108-104 win over the Sacramento Kings. The win snapped a NBA record 19 game home losing streak, and improved their record to 3-39. That sure was a rough year for the Mavs who would go on to finish 13-69 with losing streaks of 20, 16 & 17 games thrown in there. Damn.
High Flyers - Tony Dumas
Happy Belated B-day to our dude & hops master Tony Dumas, the all-time leading scorer in University of Missouri Kansas City Kangaroos history. He became the first Roo selected in the NBA draft when he was picked 19th by the Dallas Mavericks in 1994. He does own the doobieous distinction of finishing in last place during the 1995 Slam Dunk contest when he failed to make even a single dunk in the first round.
Sam Perkins
‘Big Smooth’ was fortunate enough to win both a NCAA Championship with the North Carolina Tar Heels in 1982, and win a Gold Medal with the 1984 Olympic squad. Perkins was selected 4th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1984, right behind his college teammate Michael Jordan. While he did make it to three NBA Finals with three different teams over his 17 year career, he never won that ring. Happy Birthday Sam.
