1994 NFL Draft
The amount of Draft coverage these days is absolutely nuts!! I remember way back 25 years ago to the 1994 NFL Draft when I was 12. My Dad refused to get us Cable TV so no ESPN for me. Luckily my Aunt Debbie would let me come over to her house to watch. I would bring over some sodas, snacks, and all my lists, and notebooks about the players. Those pre-Internet days of having to procure whatever Mock drafts or football coverage I could find in the local newspapers or magazines from the supermarket. I’d hide out in that back bedroom and watch it all.
Hopefully the Dolphins can grab another 10+ year starter on the DL like they did in ‘94 with Ole Miss DT Tim Bowens. Miami took him with the 20th pick that year.
Kurt Rambis!
Four TD's in One Game!! - with Jimmie Giles
4 TD’s in One Game ! ! Tampa’s original TE legend Jimmie Giles hauled in four TD passes from QB Steve Deberg back in 1985 during a South Florida shootout with the Miami Dolphins. Despite the effort, the Bucs lost 41-38, to fall to 0-7 on the season. The four TD’s ties ‘Iron’ Mike Ditka for 2nd place in most TD’s scored by a Tight End in a game. Can anybody tell us the TE who once scored 5 in a single contest?
Some Random Facts About Don Mattingly
Happy 4/20!! Born on this day #23 in your programs ‘The Hitman’ Don Mattingly. 1987 Topps were the first Baseball Cards I collected. When I got my first Beckett Price Guide some years later I can totally remember running out to my Dad’s workshop to tell him my ‘87 ‘Donnie Baseball’ was worth a whopping $2.25.
Lots more fun facts about Don in Issue 6 of Blaze! My favorite is that he hit 6 grand slams in 1987, and those were the only grand slams of his 14 year career.
Did you know Dave Winfield was Drafted by Four Teams in Three Different Sports?
Hall of Famer Dave Winfield converted from a Pitcher to an Outfielder during his two seasons (’71&’72)with the collegiate summer league team The Alaska Goldpanners. Winfield went 13-4 with 143 strikeouts in his 128 innings pitched for the Panners, while also hitting .308 with 18 HR’s & 72 RBI’s in 84 games. In 1973 Winfield was actually drafted into 4 professional Leagues!! The Padres selected him 4th overall in the MLB Draft. Two basketball franchises picked him for his skills on the hardwood, the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA & the Utah Stars of the ABA and just for the hell of it the Minnesota Vikings selected the former Minnesota Gopher in the 17th round of the NFL Draft despite Dave having never played college football. Happy Birthday Dave-O !!

On This Day - The Ice Man & The Skywalker
Flashing back this Friday to Sunday April 9th, 1978 when two of the coolest cats to ever hit the hardwood were battling it out for the NBA Scoring title. Going into the day only 14 points separated George ‘Ice Man’ Gervin & David ‘Skywalker’ Thompson. Skywalker and the Denver Nuggets were up first in an early afternoon affair with the Detroit Pistons. This also happened to be the last game played by the Pistons in Detroit Rock City’s Cobo Arena, before they made their way over to the Silverdome. Thompson came out on fire, burying shots left and right scoring 32 points in the 1st quarter. The shots kept dropping for Thompson on his way to 73 points in the 139-137 loss.
George knew he needed 59 points that night to take the title back. When the ‘Ice Man’ put up 33 alone in the 2nd quarter, he could feel the title within his grasp. With 63 points to his credit as the buzzer sounded the title was Gervin’s. Though the Spurs were somehow still blown out by 21. It’s the closest scoring chase in NBA History with the Ice Man’s 27.22 ppg topping Thompson’s 27.15. Have an awesome Friday Everybody!!
