Florida Marlins
Clemente Nunez - 1st player signed by Expansion Florida Marlins
This is Clemente Nunez. He became the 1st player signed by the Expansion Florida Marlins back on December 16th, 1991. Clemente was a 16 year old pitcher from the Dominican Republic at the time with an 88mph fastball.
He never did make it to the show however, but had a few decent seasons in the Marlins Farm system. His best outing came on May 28th, 1995 as a member of the Brevard Manatees, when he tossed a no-hitter against the West Palm Beach Expos. In fact he was only 1 walk away from a perfect game that day in the 2-0 decision.
The No-No was actually the 2nd one to occur for the new organization. A 25th round draft pick threw one in 1993 for the Elmira Pioneers of the New York-Penn League. Can you name him?
The Big League Marlins wouldn’t record their first no-hitter until the 1996 season. Who threw it?
Florida Marlins First Hit
Wishing Bret Barberie a Happy Birthday. Did you know that Bret recorded the 1st hit in Florida Marlins franchise history? Batting in the two hole for the Marlins on April 5th, 1993, he singled off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Orel Hersheiser. Can anybody name who scored the 1st run in Marlins history?
'Mr. Marlin' Jeff Conine
April 5th, 1993 - In the inaugural game of the Florida Marlins Outfielder Jeff Conine went 4 for 4. The man they call ‘Mr. Marlin’ also recorded the first stolen base in Marlins history during their 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers that day. Happy Birthday Jeff !!
The Mystery Marlin?
Can you name this Mystery Marlin? He only appeared in 5 games for the Fish back in 1998, going 5 for 18 with 5 RBI before he was traded away. He also recorded one of his 8 career triples over his sixteen seasons while with the Black & Teal.
Al Leiter Throws 1st No-Hitter in Florida Marlins History
Speedster Chucky Carr
Get your Blaze On!! Chuck Carr led the National League with 58 steals in 1993 for the expansion Florida Marlins.
Happy Birthday Bobby Bonilla!
Man I still get chills when I think about Bobby Bonilla hitting that homer in Game 7 back in the ‘97 Series. Previously struggling at the plate, Bobby Bo led off the bottom of the 7th for the Marlins and crushed the first pitch from Indians pitcher Jared Wright into the right centerfield bleachers of Pro Player Stadium. Boom!! Happy Birthday Bobby!
Darren Daulton - 'Dutch' gets his ring with the 1997 Marlins
After missing the chance for a World Series Ring during his prime with the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies, Darren got a chance for another when he was traded to the Florida Marlins part way through the 1997 season, after 17 years with the Phillies organization. Dutch went 7 for 18 (.389 BA) with a HR & 2 RBI’s as Pinch Hitter during the Marlins World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians. Happy Birthday Dutch!! R.I.P.
Marlins Win !!
Charlie Hough - Old Man & The Sea
Flashback 26 years to Monday April 5th 1993 & The Inaugural Game for the Florida Marlins. 45 year old Pitcher Charlie Hough took the mound against Orel Hershiser and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
I grew up about 45 minutes from Joe Robbie Stadium and I can remember being in 7th grade that day stuck in school and so jealous of my buddy Jim who got to go to the game with his Grandpa.
